Project and team
Research on the recovery of nutrients from human excreta and municipal wastewater for reuse in agriculture has intensified over the past years, making it increasingly hard to navigate and keep track of. Egestabase aspires to comprehensively map this scientific evidence and is the key output of the project End-of-wastewater. Financial support from the Kamprad Family Foundation is gratefully acknowledged.
Egestabase was developed by an interdisciplinary team of Swedish researchers with complementary skills and experiences, as well as, a common interest in human excreta, wastewater, and responsible nutrient management:

About the name ‘Egestabase’
The term Egestabase was initially coined as working title for our evidence platform and is a combination of the terms egesta and database. The term Egesta [ee-jes-tuh, ih-jes-] is a noun used with a singular or plural verb that refers to ‘Matter digested from the body, as excrement or other waste’ (dictionary.com).
Our use of the term Egesta was inspired by the Egesta Lab at the University of British Columbia. As suggested by Gunilla Öberg of the Egesta Lab, the term Egesta is not tied to a certain way of thinking — and thus invites us to re-frame challenges and opportunities as well as re-imagine workable solutions.
For lack of an alternative name for the evidence platform, our final release of the evidence platform is still called Egestabase.
