Egestabase Purpose
Egestabase aspires to comprehensively map scientific evidence on the recovery of nutrients from human excreta and municipal wastewater for reuse in agriculture.
The rationale is that research in this field has intensified over the past years, making it increasingly hard to navigate and keep track of.
Note that we are currently working on developing user guidance documents.
Egestabase Team
Egestabase was developed by an interdisciplinary team of Swedish researchers with complementary skills and experiences, as well as, a common interest in human excreta, wastewater, and responsible nutrient management.
It is the key output of the project End-of-wastewater, for which financial support from the Kamprad Family Foundation is gratefully acknowledged.

Egestabase Name
Egestabase is a combination of the terms ‘egesta’ and ‘database’.
Egesta [ee-jes-tuh, ih-jes-] is a noun used with a singular or plural verb that refers to ‘Matter digested from the body, as excrement or other waste’ (dictionary.com)
Our use of the term was inspired by the Egesta Lab at the University of British Columbia. As suggested by Gunilla Öberg of the Egesta Lab, the term egesta is not tied to a certain way of thinking — and thus invites us to re-frame challenges and opportunities as well as re-imagine workable solutions.
